Lacock

Photo of Lacock Village

Lacock village dates back to the 13th century but has remained relatively untouched over the years meaning there are many limewashed, half-timbered and stone houses there. This adds charm and character to the picturesque village of Lacock which is situated a few miles south of Chippenham.

Lacock Abbey is a medieval abbey located in the heart of Lacock village. It has been converted into a country house and formerly belonged to William Henry Fox Talbot, a photography pioneer. The atmospheric yet simple rooms include medieval cloisters, a sacristy and chapter house and have survived largely intact. Newly-restored botanic gardens and greenhouses surround Lacock Abbey, which is open to visitors, as well as the museum dedicated to the ‘Father of Modern Photography’ which is fascinating.

The beauty of Lacock Abbey made it perfect for filming many famous films in, including Harry Potter, Pride and Prejudice and The Other Boleyn Girl. Admission may be by a combination of guided tours and self-guided visits.

Walking through Lacock Abbey's Victorian woodland in Lacock reveals a stunning display of flowers in spring and magnificent trees, while the Botanic Garden shows the varied and large plant collections of Fox Talbot.

Many wonderful old shops and pubs are in Lacock which helps make Lacock a remarkable step back in history. Lacock is owned almost entirely by the National Trust due to its unspoiled appearance which also attracts many tourists and makes it the ideal place to visit.
