The Slaughters

The Slaughters consist of Lower Slaughter and Upper Slaughter: two of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds. Lower Slaughter is especially sought out by tourists due to its picturesque nature.
The River Eye drapes itself through the centre of the Slaughters, setting off the cottages and their small, bright gardens to perfection. It is worth the effort to walk the footpath between the Slaughters as their characters are so different and it is the perfect way to explore them while absorbing the atmosphere and beauty of surrounding nature.
The charming village of Upper Slaughter has a historic Norman Church, St. Peters with parts dating back to the 12th century. Upper Slaughter contains typical Cotswold stone houses and a manor. There have been few new buildings in the past century which means the historic atmosphere has been maintained.
Lower Slaughter is situated off the Roman Fosse Way and is a wonderfully preserved typical Cotswold village, with a Water Mill and ducks on the stream. A wander alongside the stream in Lower Slaughter seems like a privilege. Lower Slaughter is home to the pretty church of St Mary. The church and its extraordinary spire were re-built in 1867 but some arches between the nave and the south aisle date back to the thirteenth century.
The name ‘Slaughter’ has no connection with blood but comes from the old English word ‘slohtre’ meaning a muddy place, which it may once have been but not anymore.
The Slaughters are very tranquil and surrounded by nature and historic buildings with many photo opportunities making both Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter perfect for a relaxing day out.
